How to Use Profit Calculator

Enter your revenue and costs into the calculator to determine your profit and profit margin.

  2. Enter your primary costs — Add the main costs directly associated with producing or delivering your product or service.
  3. Add additional costs — Include other relevant expenses such as fees, marketing, overheads or tax.
  4. Calculate your profit — Select Calculate Profit to see net profit, profit margin, total costs and optional per-unit figures.

Calculate Profit and Profit Margin

Profit is the amount left after all relevant costs have been deducted from revenue. The basic profit formula is Profit = Revenue − Total Costs. Total costs can include direct costs as well as other expenses associated with generating the revenue.

For example, if a business generates £15,000 in revenue and has £9,000 in total costs, its net profit is £6,000. The profit margin is 40%, meaning that £40 of every £100 in revenue remains as profit before any costs not included in the calculation.

Understanding Profit Margin

Profit margin expresses profit as a percentage of revenue. It is calculated using Profit Margin = (Profit ÷ Revenue) × 100. This makes it easier to compare profitability across different sales amounts because the result is expressed as a percentage rather than a monetary value.

Profit vs Revenue

Revenue is the total amount generated before costs are deducted, while profit is what remains after costs have been accounted for. A business can have high revenue but relatively low profit if its operating, production, marketing or other costs are also high.

Understanding Your Profit Results

The calculator shows net profit, profit margin and total costs. A positive net profit means revenue is greater than the costs entered. A negative result means the costs are greater than revenue and the activity has produced a loss.

The optional units field can also show revenue and profit per unit. These figures are calculated by dividing the relevant totals by the number of units entered. The calculator only uses the figures you provide and does not automatically account for costs, taxes, refunds, financing, depreciation or other expenses that you have not included.
