Range Calculator
Calculate the range of a set of numbers quickly and accurately, with the minimum, maximum, count and range shown alongside the result.
Range Calculator
Enter your numbers below, choose the number of decimal places and calculate the difference between the highest and lowest values.
What Is a Range Calculator?
A range calculator finds the range of a data set by identifying its lowest and highest values and calculating the difference between them. The range is a simple measure of statistical spread that shows how far apart the extreme values in a set of numbers are.
A range calculator can be useful for statistics, schoolwork, data analysis, research, surveys and everyday comparisons where you need to understand the spread of numerical data quickly.
Why Use Range Calculator?
This free range calculator makes it easy to analyse a list of numbers without manually identifying the smallest and largest values or performing the subtraction yourself.
Accurate Range Calculation
Automatically identifies the minimum and maximum values and calculates their difference.
Minimum and Maximum
Shows the lowest and highest values alongside the calculated range.
Flexible Number Input
Enter values using commas, spaces or separate lines to suit your data.
Decimal Values
Supports integers and decimal numbers for a wide range of numerical data.
Negative Numbers
Calculate ranges from data sets containing positive and negative values.
Adjustable Precision
Choose between 0 and 10 decimal places for displaying the calculated results.
How to Use Range Calculator
Enter your data set and the calculator will determine its minimum, maximum and range automatically.
- Enter Numbers — Type or paste your values into the input field, separated by commas, spaces or line breaks.
- Choose Precision — Select between 0 and 10 decimal places for displaying the results.
- Calculate Range — Click Calculate Range to process your data set.
- Review Results — View the range, minimum, maximum and number of values in your data set.
How to Calculate the Range
To calculate the range, identify the largest and smallest values in a data set and subtract the smallest value from the largest. The formula is: Range = Maximum Value − Minimum Value.
For example, if a data set contains 4, 7, 10, 12 and 18, the maximum is 18 and the minimum is 4. The range is therefore 18 − 4 = 14. The range describes the distance between the two extreme values, regardless of how many values occur between them.
What Does the Range Tell You?
The range provides a quick indication of how widely spread a set of numerical values is. A small range means the highest and lowest values are relatively close together, while a large range indicates a greater difference between the extremes.
Range Compared With Mean and Median
The range is different from other common statistical measures. The mean is calculated by adding all values and dividing by their count, while the median is the middle value after the data has been ordered. The range instead focuses only on the minimum and maximum values, making it particularly quick to calculate but more sensitive to extreme values.
Understanding Range Calculator Results
The calculator reports the range, minimum, maximum and count of the values entered. The range is calculated by subtracting the minimum value from the maximum value. If all entered values are identical, the range is zero because there is no difference between the highest and lowest values.
You can enter positive numbers, negative numbers, decimal values and scientific notation. The selected decimal-place setting controls how results are displayed and does not change the underlying values used in the calculation. Values are processed directly in your browser and are not sent to a server by the calculator.
