What Is a Robots.txt Generator?
A robots.txt generator creates the plain-text instructions used by a website's robots.txt file. These instructions can tell automated crawlers which URL paths they should not request and can identify the location of an XML sitemap.
The robots.txt file is normally published at the root of a website, such as https://example.com/robots.txt. Website owners can use it to communicate crawler access preferences without creating a separate file manually.
Why Use the Robots.txt Generator?
Creating robots.txt rules manually is straightforward, but a generator can make it easier to assemble common directives consistently and review the resulting file before publishing it.
Custom Crawler Rules
Configure rules for all crawlers or specify individual user-agents when different crawler instructions are required.
Allow and Disallow Paths
Add common website paths or enter your own paths to create customised access rules.
Sitemap Support
Add the absolute URL of your XML sitemap so crawlers can be directed to its location.
Crawl Delay
Add an optional Crawl-delay directive when appropriate for crawlers that support it.
Instant Preview
Review the complete robots.txt content before copying or downloading the generated file.
Free to Use
Generate robots.txt files directly in your browser without an account or additional software.
How to Use the Robots.txt Generator
Configure the file according to your website's crawler access requirements and then download the generated robots.txt file.
- Choose your user-agent — Keep the default asterisk to apply the rules to all crawlers, or add specific user-agents.
- Configure access rules — Choose whether crawlers should be allowed to access all pages and optionally add common or custom disallow and allow paths.
- Add sitemap and crawl settings — Enter your XML sitemap URL and select a crawl delay if required.
- Generate and download — Generate the file, review the output and download it as robots.txt for publication at your website's root.
How to Create an SEO-Friendly Robots.txt File
A robots.txt file provides crawler instructions using a simple text-based syntax. A typical file starts with a User-agent declaration followed by Allow or Disallow directives. For example, User-agent: * followed by Disallow: /private/ communicates that the specified path should not be requested by the crawlers covered by that rule.
Robots.txt should be used carefully. An incorrectly configured rule can prevent crawlers from accessing content that you intended to make available. Before publishing a generated file, review every User-agent, Allow and Disallow directive and make sure the paths match your intended crawler policy.
Use Specific Disallow Rules
Disallow rules should normally target areas that genuinely should not be crawled. Common examples can include private application areas, temporary directories or selected internal paths. Avoid blocking broad sections of a website unless you have confirmed that doing so is appropriate.
Add Your XML Sitemap
An XML sitemap can be referenced in robots.txt using a Sitemap directive followed by its full URL. Including a sitemap location provides crawlers with a clear way to discover the sitemap independently of the individual crawler access rules.
Robots.txt Rules and Limitations
Robots.txt is a crawler access mechanism rather than an access-control system. It should not be used to protect confidential information because a disallowed URL can still be discovered, and the file itself is publicly accessible. Sensitive resources should be protected using appropriate authentication and authorisation controls.
Support for individual robots.txt directives can vary between crawlers. In particular, Crawl-delay is not a standard instruction supported consistently by all major search engine crawlers. Do not assume that adding a directive guarantees identical behaviour across every crawler.
Robots.txt also should not be treated as a general URL removal mechanism. If a page must be prevented from appearing in search results, use an appropriate indexing-control method for that situation rather than relying solely on a Disallow rule.
This generator operates entirely in your browser. The robots.txt content is generated locally and is not uploaded to your website automatically. You remain responsible for reviewing the generated rules and publishing the file correctly.
