Roofing Calculator

Enter your roof dimensions, pitch and waste allowance to estimate the roof surface area and roofing materials required.

Roof Dimensions

For a standard gable roof, enter the full building length and width.
Enter the horizontal length of the rectangular building.
Enter the horizontal width of the building.
Enter the roof pitch in degrees. Use 0° for a flat roof.
Use this when calculating multiple identical buildings or roof sections.

Material Allowance

10% is a useful starting point for many straightforward roofs. Complex roofs may require more.

Optional Cost Estimates

Enter the material price for one square metre or square foot.
Enter the estimated roofing installation cost per square metre or square foot.

What Is a Roofing Calculator?

A roofing calculator is an online tool that estimates the surface area of a roof and the amount of roofing material that may be required. Unlike a simple building-area calculation, a roofing calculation can account for the slope of a pitched roof, which increases the actual surface area compared with the horizontal footprint of the building.

This roofing calculator is designed for straightforward rectangular roofs and can be used when planning roofing materials, preparing an initial project estimate or checking measurements before obtaining supplier or contractor quotations. It also provides optional material and installation cost estimates when prices are entered.

Why Use a Roofing Calculator?

Calculating the roof surface area before purchasing materials can help provide a useful starting point for budgeting and project planning. This tool combines roof dimensions, pitch and waste allowance in one calculation.

1

Roof Area

Estimate the actual sloping surface area of a pitched roof rather than relying only on the building footprint.

2

Pitch Adjustment

Apply the roof pitch to account for the additional surface area created by sloping roof planes.

3

Waste Allowance

Add a configurable percentage for cutting, overlaps and material waste during installation.

4

Multiple Roofs

Calculate several identical buildings or roof sections at the same time by entering the required quantity.

5

Cost Estimates

Enter material and installation prices to produce an optional estimated project cost.

6

Metric & Imperial

Work in metres and square metres or feet and square feet depending on your preferred measurement system.

How to Use Roofing Calculator

Enter the dimensions of the building or roof section, select the appropriate roof type and provide the roof pitch. The calculator will then estimate the surface area and material requirement.

  1. Select the measurement unit — Choose metres for metric calculations or feet for imperial calculations.
  2. Enter the roof dimensions — Enter the building length and width and select the appropriate roof type.
  3. Enter the roof pitch and waste allowance — Use 0° for a flat roof and add a suitable waste percentage for your project.
  4. Calculate the results — Review the estimated roof area, material requirement and any optional cost estimates.

How Much Roofing Material Do I Need?

The amount of roofing material required depends on the actual surface area of the roof rather than simply the floor or building footprint. For a pitched roof, the sloping roof surface is longer than its horizontal projection, so the roof pitch must be taken into account when estimating the required material.

Once the roof surface area has been calculated, a waste allowance can be added. This provides additional material for cutting, overlaps and other installation requirements. The appropriate allowance depends on the type of roofing material and the complexity of the roof, so the calculator should be treated as a planning estimate rather than a substitute for a professional material schedule.

Calculating Roof Area from Pitch

For a simple symmetrical gable roof, the calculator uses the horizontal building footprint and the roof pitch to determine a slope factor. The horizontal area is then multiplied by this factor to estimate the total surface area of the sloping roof planes. A roof with a steeper pitch has a greater surface area than the same building with a shallow pitch.

Allowing for Roofing Waste

Roofing materials rarely fit a roof without any cutting or overlap. Additional material may be needed around roof edges, ridges, hips, valleys, chimneys, roof windows and other penetrations. A 10% allowance can be used as a general starting point for a straightforward roof, but the required allowance may be higher for complicated roof designs or materials with specific installation requirements.

Roofing Calculator Accuracy and Limitations

This calculator is intended to provide a practical estimate for a simple rectangular roof. It does not create a detailed roofing plan and does not independently account for every roof feature. Complex roofs should be divided into individual roof planes and calculated separately, with the resulting areas combined.

Actual material requirements can depend on manufacturer specifications, minimum and maximum roof pitches, required overlaps, batten layouts, tile or shingle dimensions, sheet lengths, pattern requirements, ridge and hip details, valleys, roof penetrations and local building requirements. Measurements should therefore be checked before ordering materials, and a qualified roofing professional should be consulted where appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

The roofing calculator uses the roof length, roof width and roof pitch to estimate the roof surface area. It can then add a waste allowance and calculate an estimated amount of roofing material and optional costs.
A pitched roof has a larger surface area than the horizontal footprint of the building. The calculator uses the roof pitch to determine the sloping surface area rather than treating the roof as flat.
A common starting point is around 10% for straightforward roofs, but the appropriate allowance depends on the roofing material, roof shape, number of valleys and hips, cuts, penetrations and installation method.
Yes. You can optionally enter a price per square metre or square foot to estimate the material cost. You can also enter an installation price to estimate the fitting cost.
Yes. Select a roof pitch of 0 degrees. The calculator will treat the roof surface as level with the building footprint.
It provides an estimate for a simple rectangular roof. Complex roofs with multiple sections, dormers, valleys, hips or unusual shapes should be divided into individual areas and checked by a qualified roofing professional.
