What Is a Savings Calculator?

A savings calculator is an online tool that estimates how much money you could accumulate over a set period when you combine an initial savings balance, regular contributions and interest. It can help illustrate the potential effect of consistent saving and compound interest over time.

A savings calculator can be useful when planning an emergency fund, a future purchase, a holiday, a home deposit or another savings goal. By changing the contribution, interest rate or time period, you can compare different saving scenarios without performing the calculations manually.

Why Use Savings Calculator?

This free savings calculator provides a simple way to estimate potential savings growth and understand how different inputs affect the projected balance.

1

Estimate Future Savings

Calculate an estimated future balance based on your starting savings, contributions, interest rate and saving period.

2

Include Regular Contributions

Add a monthly contribution to see how consistent saving could increase your projected balance.

3

Calculate Compound Interest

See how interest can contribute to savings growth when it is periodically added to your balance.

4

Choose Your Time Period

Enter a savings period from one to 100 years to model short-term and long-term saving scenarios.

5

Multiple Currencies

Display your savings calculation in GBP, USD, EUR, CAD, AUD or JPY.

6

Instant Results

View your estimated future value, total contributions and interest earned as soon as the calculation is completed.

How to Use Savings Calculator

Enter the details of your savings plan to estimate how your balance could develop over the selected period.

  1. Choose a currency — Select the currency you want to use for the calculation.
  2. Enter your initial savings — Enter the amount you already have saved at the start of the calculation.
  3. Enter your monthly contribution — Enter how much you expect to add to your savings each month.
  4. Enter the interest rate and period — Enter the annual interest rate, choose a compounding frequency and specify how many years you plan to save, then select Calculate Savings.

How to Calculate Savings Growth

Savings growth depends on the amount you start with, how much you add regularly, the interest rate and the amount of time the money remains saved. When interest is compounded, previously earned interest can become part of the balance used to calculate subsequent interest.

For example, starting with £1,000 and adding £200 each month for several years can produce a significantly larger balance than the total amount personally contributed because the savings may also earn interest. The actual amount will depend on the interest rate, compounding method and whether the rate remains unchanged.

Savings Calculator Formula

For monthly compounding with regular monthly contributions, the future value can be estimated by applying the periodic interest rate to the starting balance and the recurring contributions over the number of periods. The calculation separates the growth of the initial balance from the growth generated by regular contributions.

Compound Interest and Regular Savings

Compound interest can increase the rate at which savings grow because interest that remains in the account can itself earn interest in later periods. Regular contributions can further increase the balance by adding new money throughout the savings period.

Understanding Savings Calculator Results

The Estimated Future Value represents the projected balance at the end of the selected period. Total Contributions represents the initial savings plus the regular contributions you enter. Estimated Interest Earned is the difference between those contributions and the projected future value.

This calculator assumes that the entered annual interest rate remains unchanged throughout the selected period and that contributions are made regularly. It does not account for inflation, tax, account fees, withdrawals, changes in interest rates or other real-world factors. The results are estimates for general information and planning purposes and are not a guarantee of future savings returns or financial advice.
