What Is a Savings Goal Calculator?

A savings goal calculator helps you work out how much you need to save regularly to reach a specific financial target within a chosen period. It considers the amount you already have, the amount you want to have in the future, your expected interest rate and the way interest is compounded.

This can be useful when planning for a deposit, emergency fund, holiday, vehicle, major purchase or another savings target. Instead of choosing a contribution amount first, you can start with the amount you want to reach and calculate the regular saving required to get there.

Why Use Savings Goal Calculator?

The calculator provides a straightforward way to turn a savings target into a regular contribution plan while accounting for the potential effect of compound interest.

1

Set a Savings Target

Enter the exact amount you want to have saved by the end of your chosen timeframe.

2

Include Current Savings

Your existing balance can be included so the calculation reflects the money you already have.

3

Account for Interest

Enter an expected annual interest rate to estimate how your savings could grow over time.

4

Choose Compounding

Select monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or annual compounding to match your assumptions.

5

Compare Contributions and Interest

See how much of your projected final balance comes from your deposits and estimated interest.

6

Support Multiple Currencies

Calculate your savings target using GBP, USD, EUR, CAD, AUD or JPY.

How to Use Savings Goal Calculator

Enter the details of your savings target and the calculator will estimate the regular contribution needed to reach it.

  1. Enter your savings goal — Enter the total amount you want to have saved at the end of the chosen period.
  2. Enter your current savings — Add the amount you already have saved so its expected growth can be included.
  3. Enter your interest assumptions — Provide the annual interest rate and choose how frequently interest is compounded.
  4. Set your timeframe — Choose how many years you have to reach the goal, select your contribution frequency and calculate the required regular saving amount.

How to Calculate the Savings Needed to Reach a Goal

The amount you need to save depends on your target, starting balance, expected interest rate and the time available. If you already have money saved, that balance can grow through compound interest while you continue making regular contributions.

The calculator first determines the effective annual growth rate from the annual interest rate and selected compounding frequency. It then converts that rate into a rate appropriate for your chosen contribution frequency. The future value of the existing balance is combined with the future value of the regular contributions to determine the contribution required to reach the target.

Compound Interest and Savings Goals

Compound interest means that interest earned can itself contribute to future growth. Over longer periods, this can make a significant difference to a savings plan because both the original balance and accumulated interest may continue to grow.

Example of a Savings Goal

For example, suppose you have £5,000 saved and want to reach £25,000 within 10 years. If you assume a 5% annual interest rate compounded monthly, the calculator can estimate the regular contribution needed to bridge the remaining gap. The exact result depends on the contribution frequency and the assumptions entered.

The calculation assumes contributions are made at the end of each contribution period. Making deposits at different times can produce slightly different results because the money may have more or less time to earn interest.

Understanding Savings Goal Calculator Results

Required regular contribution is the estimated amount you need to deposit at each selected contribution interval to reach the target. Total future contributions shows the combined value of those regular deposits over the selected period.

Total amount deposited combines your current savings with your future contributions. Estimated interest earned represents the projected growth above the amount deposited, while estimated final balance shows the balance at the end of the selected period.

These figures are estimates rather than guarantees. Real savings accounts can have variable interest rates, account fees, taxes, withdrawal restrictions, minimum balances and different interest-calculation rules. Inflation can also reduce the future purchasing power of money. This calculator is intended for general information and planning and does not constitute financial advice.
