What Is a Scientific Calculator?

A scientific calculator is a mathematical tool designed for calculations that require more than basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. It provides functions for powers, roots, trigonometry, logarithms, exponentials, factorials and mathematical constants.

Scientific calculators are useful for students, teachers, engineers, scientists, programmers and anyone working with advanced mathematical expressions. This online scientific calculator performs calculations directly in your browser and provides a convenient alternative to a physical calculator.

Why Use Scientific Calculator?

This free scientific calculator combines common arithmetic operations with a range of advanced mathematical functions in one browser-based tool.

1

Advanced Functions

Calculate powers, roots, factorials, logarithms, exponentials, percentages and absolute values.

2

Trigonometry

Use sine, cosine and tangent together with their inverse functions for trigonometric calculations.

3

Degrees & Radians

Switch between degrees and radians when working with trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions.

4

Mathematical Constants

Insert commonly used constants including π and Euler's number e directly into calculations.

5

Memory Functions

Store, recall, add to or subtract from a calculator memory value while working through calculations.

6

Keyboard Support

Enter supported mathematical expressions from your keyboard as well as using the on-screen calculator buttons.

How to Use Scientific Calculator

Build a mathematical expression using the calculator buttons or your keyboard, select the appropriate angle mode and calculate the result.

  1. Enter an Expression — Enter numbers, operators, functions or constants such as 2^3, sin(30) or π.
  2. Choose an Angle Mode — Select Degrees or Radians when using trigonometric functions.
  3. Calculate the Expression — Press the equals button or Enter to evaluate the expression.
  4. Review the Result — The calculated result is displayed above the keypad and can be used with Ans for another calculation.

How to Use a Scientific Calculator

A scientific calculator allows several mathematical operations to be combined into a single expression. For example, entering 2^3 + sqrt(16) calculates the power of 2 to the third power and then adds the square root of 16, producing 12.

The calculator supports standard arithmetic operators, parentheses and a range of scientific functions. Parentheses can be used to control the order of operations, while the caret symbol ^ is used for powers.

Trigonometric Functions

The calculator includes sine, cosine and tangent, as well as their inverse functions. Trigonometric calculations can be performed in degrees or radians. For example, in degree mode, sin(30) produces 0.5.

Logarithms, Powers and Roots

Use log for the base-10 logarithm and ln for the natural logarithm. The calculator also supports square roots, cube roots, powers, squares, cubes and exponential functions. For example, 2^5 equals 32, while sqrt(81) equals 9.

Understanding Scientific Calculator Results

Scientific calculations may produce decimal results that are approximations because computer calculations use finite-precision floating-point arithmetic. Very large or very small values may also be represented using scientific notation.

Some mathematical functions have restricted domains. For example, the real logarithm of zero or a negative number is undefined, and division by zero cannot produce a finite real result. The calculator reports invalid expressions rather than treating undefined results as ordinary numbers.
