What Is a Screen Resolution Calculator?

A Screen Resolution Calculator is an online tool for analysing the pixel dimensions of a display. By entering the horizontal and vertical resolution, you can determine the total number of pixels, megapixel count, aspect ratio and diagonal pixel resolution.

The calculator can also estimate pixel density in pixels per inch (PPI) when you provide the physical diagonal size of the display. This makes it useful for comparing monitors, televisions, laptops, tablets, smartphones and other digital displays.

Why Use the Screen Resolution Calculator?

Screen specifications often provide resolution and physical size separately. This calculator combines those values to provide useful information about the display without requiring manual calculations.

1

Total Pixel Count

Calculate the exact number of individual pixels represented by a display resolution.

2

Megapixel Calculation

Convert the total pixel count into megapixels for easier comparison between resolutions.

3

Aspect Ratio

Automatically reduce the horizontal and vertical dimensions to their simplest aspect ratio.

4

Pixel Density

Calculate approximate pixels per inch when the physical diagonal screen size is provided.

5

Common Resolutions

Quickly load several common HD, Full HD, QHD, 4K, 8K and 16:10 resolutions.

6

Free to Use

Perform screen resolution calculations directly in your browser without registration or software installation.

How to Use the Screen Resolution Calculator

Enter the pixel dimensions of your display to calculate its resolution characteristics. Physical screen size is optional and is only required for the PPI calculation.

  1. Enter the horizontal resolution — Enter the number of pixels across the display, such as 1920.
  2. Enter the vertical resolution — Enter the number of pixels from the top to the bottom, such as 1080.
  3. Enter the screen size if required — Enter the diagonal screen size and select inches or centimetres if you also want to calculate pixel density.
  4. Select Calculate Resolution — The calculator displays the total pixels, megapixels, aspect ratio, diagonal resolution and, when possible, PPI.

How Screen Resolution Is Calculated

Screen resolution describes the number of pixels used to display an image horizontally and vertically. A resolution written as 1920 × 1080 therefore contains 1,920 pixels across and 1,080 pixels vertically. Multiplying these dimensions gives 2,073,600 total pixels.

The total pixel count can also be expressed in megapixels. One megapixel represents one million pixels, so the total number of pixels is divided by 1,000,000 to obtain the approximate megapixel value.

Understanding Screen Aspect Ratio

Aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between the width and height of a display. For example, 1920 × 1080 reduces to 16:9, while 2560 × 1600 reduces to 16:10. The calculator automatically reduces the entered dimensions to the simplest whole-number ratio.

Understanding Pixel Density and PPI

Pixels per inch, commonly abbreviated as PPI, measures how densely pixels are packed across a display. To calculate PPI, the calculator determines the diagonal pixel resolution using the horizontal and vertical pixel dimensions and divides it by the physical diagonal display size in inches.

Screen Resolution, Pixel Count and Display Size

A higher resolution means that a display contains more pixels, but resolution alone does not determine how large or sharp a display appears. Physical screen size also affects pixel density. Two displays can have the same 1920 × 1080 resolution while having different PPI values if their physical dimensions differ.

The calculator's PPI result is based on the diagonal screen size supplied by the user. If the stated screen size is rounded by a manufacturer, the resulting PPI value may also be slightly different from the exact physical pixel density of the panel.

Frequently Asked Questions

A screen resolution calculator can calculate the total number of pixels, megapixels and aspect ratio from the horizontal and vertical pixel dimensions. If the physical screen size is provided, it can also calculate approximate pixel density in pixels per inch (PPI).
Multiply the horizontal resolution by the vertical resolution. For example, a 1920 × 1080 display has 2,073,600 total pixels.
The aspect ratio is calculated by dividing the horizontal and vertical resolution by their greatest common divisor and reducing them to the simplest whole-number ratio.
PPI means pixels per inch. It describes the pixel density of a display. A higher PPI means more pixels are packed into each inch of the screen.
No. The horizontal and vertical resolution are enough to calculate total pixels, megapixels and aspect ratio. Entering the diagonal screen size is optional and allows the calculator to estimate pixel density.
Yes. The calculator can be used with smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktop monitors, televisions and other displays when their pixel resolution is known.
