Security Key Generator
Generate a secure random security key directly in your browser with your choice of length and key format.

Choose a key length and format, then generate a cryptographically secure random key.
What Is a Security Key Generator?
A security key generator creates random secret strings that can be used by compatible applications, services, APIs and technical systems for security-related purposes. A strong random key can make an effective secret when a system requires an unpredictable value for authentication, signing or access control.
This free Security Key Generator lets you choose the length and character format before creating a key. Generation happens directly in your browser using a cryptographically secure random number source, making it useful when you need a new random secret without installing additional software.
Why Use Security Key Generator?
A dedicated security key generator provides a quick way to create unpredictable random values for systems that accept manually generated secrets. Different applications can have different requirements, so this tool provides several lengths and formats.
Secure Randomness
Uses the browser's Web Crypto API to generate random values suitable for security-sensitive key generation.
Multiple Lengths
Choose from 16 through 128 characters to match the requirements of different applications and configurations.
Three Formats
Generate Base64url, hexadecimal or alphanumeric keys depending on the format accepted by your system.
Browser-Based
The key is generated directly within your web browser without requiring a separate application or installation.
Quick Copying
Copy the generated security key to your clipboard with a single button after generating it.
Free to Use
Generate security keys online for free without creating an account or installing additional software.
How to Use Security Key Generator
Generating a security key takes only a few seconds. Select the settings required by your application and create a new random key.
- Choose a key length — Select the number of characters you want the generated key to contain.
- Select a format — Choose Base64url, hexadecimal or alphanumeric depending on the requirements of your system.
- Generate the key — Click "Generate Security Key" to create a new cryptographically secure random value.
- Copy and store it securely — Use the copy button and store the key using the secure secret-management method recommended by your application.
Generate a Secure Random Security Key Online
Security keys are commonly used as secret values by software and online services. Depending on the application, a key may be used as an API secret, application secret, signing secret, encryption-related value or another authentication credential. The exact requirements vary between systems, so always follow the documentation for the service where the key will be used.
A security key should be sufficiently unpredictable and should not be based on information that another person could guess, such as a name, website address, date or memorable phrase. Randomly generated values are preferable when a system requires a secret that should be difficult to predict.
Choosing the Right Security Key Length
The appropriate length depends on the application accepting the key. Longer keys provide a larger possible set of values, but some applications impose their own maximum length or require a particular encoding. If the application specifies an exact key length, character set or format, those requirements should take priority over the options provided here.
Base64url, Hexadecimal and Alphanumeric Keys
Base64url keys use characters that are convenient for many web and URL-based applications. Hexadecimal keys contain only digits from 0 to 9 and letters from A to F, making them useful for systems that expect hexadecimal secrets. Alphanumeric keys contain uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers and can be useful where symbols are not accepted.
Security Key Generator Information
This tool generates random secret strings; it does not automatically register, activate or associate a generated key with any website, application or account. A generated value becomes useful as a security credential only when it is configured in a compatible system that accepts that type of secret.
Generated keys should be treated as sensitive credentials. Do not publish them in source code repositories, public documents, screenshots or client-side code when they are intended to remain secret. Store production secrets using appropriate access controls and a secure secrets-management solution where available.
This tool is also different from a physical hardware security key. It does not create FIDO2, WebAuthn or other hardware authentication devices. It creates random secret strings for software and configuration use.
