SHA-1 Hash Generator

Enter text or select a file, choose the hash format and generate a 40-character SHA-1 hexadecimal hash.

Text is encoded as UTF-8 before the SHA-1 calculation.
Ready to generate a SHA-1 hash.
Security note: SHA-1 is considered cryptographically broken for collision resistance and should not be used for new security-critical applications such as password storage, digital signatures or certificates. Use a modern algorithm such as SHA-256 or SHA-3 when appropriate.

What Is SHA-1 Hash Generator?

A SHA-1 Hash Generator converts text or file data into a SHA-1 hash. SHA-1 is a member of the Secure Hash Algorithm family and produces a fixed-length 160-bit digest, normally displayed as a 40-character hexadecimal string. The same input bytes always produce the same SHA-1 result.

SHA-1 can still be useful when working with legacy software, older development systems, existing identifiers and compatibility requirements. This tool provides a convenient way to calculate SHA-1 hashes without installing additional software or sending the data to a remote hashing service.

Why Use SHA-1 Hash Generator?

This free SHA-1 generator provides a straightforward way to calculate standard SHA-1 hashes for text and files directly from a web browser.

1

Text Hashing

Enter or paste text and generate its SHA-1 digest using UTF-8 encoding.

2

File Hashing

Select a local file and calculate a SHA-1 hash from its actual binary contents.

3

Instant Results

Generate the hash directly in your browser without waiting for a server response.

4

Copy Hash

Copy the generated 40-character hexadecimal SHA-1 result to your clipboard.

5

Local Processing

Text and selected files are processed within your browser rather than uploaded by this tool.

6

Standard Output

Results use the standard hexadecimal representation of the 160-bit SHA-1 digest.

How to Use SHA-1 Hash Generator

Use the generator to calculate a SHA-1 hash from text or a local file in a few simple steps.

  1. Choose an input type — Select Text to hash written content or File to hash the contents of a file.
  2. Enter or select your data — Type or paste text into the text box, or select the file you want to process.
  3. Choose the hash format — Select lowercase or uppercase hexadecimal output.
  4. Generate and copy — Click Generate SHA-1 Hash, then use the Copy button to copy the resulting hash.

Generate SHA-1 Hashes Online

SHA-1 generates a 160-bit message digest from an input message. When represented using hexadecimal notation, the result contains 40 hexadecimal characters. For example, the SHA-1 hash of the text hello is 2aae6c35c94fcfb415dbe95f408b9ce91ee846ed. The hash of an empty input is da39a3ee5e6b4b0d3255bfef95601890afd80709.

SHA-1 is deterministic, which means identical input bytes produce an identical digest. Even a small change to the input normally produces a substantially different result. When hashing files, the calculation is based on the file's bytes rather than its filename, extension or location.

SHA-1 Hash Format

A SHA-1 digest is 160 bits, equivalent to 20 bytes. Each byte is represented by two hexadecimal characters, resulting in the familiar 40-character SHA-1 hash format. SHA-1 hashes are commonly written using the hexadecimal characters 0–9 and a–f, although uppercase hexadecimal output represents the same underlying digest.

SHA-1 for Checksums and Legacy Systems

Although SHA-1 is no longer recommended for modern cryptographic security, it remains relevant when compatibility with an existing system requires a SHA-1 value. It can also be encountered in older software, historical datasets and legacy checksum workflows where the security limitations are understood and collision resistance is not relied upon.

SHA-1 Security and Compatibility

SHA-1 should not be selected for new applications that depend on collision resistance. Practical collision attacks have demonstrated that specially constructed different inputs can be made to produce the same SHA-1 digest. As a result, SHA-1 is unsuitable for security-critical uses such as digital signatures, certificates and other applications where collision resistance is an important security property.

For modern cryptographic hashing, SHA-256 or SHA-3 is generally a more appropriate choice. Passwords should not be stored as simple SHA-1 hashes; password storage should use a password-specific hashing or key-derivation algorithm such as Argon2, bcrypt, scrypt or PBKDF2. This tool is intended for SHA-1 generation where the algorithm is specifically required for compatibility, testing, checksums or other appropriate non-security-critical purposes.

When text is hashed, this generator converts the text to UTF-8 bytes before calculating the SHA-1 digest. Consequently, text encoding and the exact input characters matter. For files, the complete file contents are processed, so even a small modification to the file produces a different hash.

Frequently Asked Questions

SHA-1 is a cryptographic hash function that produces a 160-bit digest, normally represented as a 40-character hexadecimal string.
SHA-1 is no longer considered secure for collision-resistant cryptographic applications. Modern applications should generally use SHA-256, SHA-3 or another current cryptographic hash function instead.
SHA-1 may still be encountered in legacy systems, compatibility requirements, existing identifiers, checksums and non-security-critical data comparisons.
No. This generator performs SHA-1 hashing in your web browser. Text and selected files are processed locally by the page and are not uploaded to YesTools by the tool.
Yes. Switch the generator to File mode, select a file from your device and generate its SHA-1 hash. The calculation uses the file's actual bytes, so changing the file contents changes its hash.
SHA-1 produces a 160-bit digest, which is normally displayed as 40 hexadecimal characters.
