What Is Shuffle Lines?

Shuffle Lines is a free online text tool that randomly changes the order of complete lines in a block of text. Instead of arranging lines alphabetically, numerically or in their original sequence, the tool creates a random order for the lines you provide.

The tool is useful for randomising lists, creating a different order for entries, mixing test data, rearranging options or simply changing the sequence of line-based text. Each line remains intact, so the words, characters and punctuation within an individual line are not changed.

Why Use Shuffle Lines?

Shuffle Lines provides a quick way to randomise line-based text without manually moving entries around. It can handle ordinary lists and larger blocks of text while keeping the operation simple and entirely browser-based.

1

Randomise Line Order

Arrange complete lines into a randomly generated order with a single action.

2

Keep Lines Intact

The words, characters and punctuation inside each line remain unchanged.

3

Shuffle Lists Quickly

Randomise lists containing one item per line without moving entries manually.

4

Preserve Blank Lines

Keep blank lines as part of the shuffled content or remove them before processing.

5

Copy or Download

Copy the shuffled result to your clipboard or download it as a plain text file.

6

Browser-Based Processing

Your text is processed locally in your browser without requiring an upload to a server.

How to Use Shuffle Lines

You can randomise the order of your text in just a few steps. Each line is treated as a separate item.

  1. Enter your text — Paste or type your list or other line-based text into the input box, using one item per line.
  2. Choose your option — Leave Preserve blank lines enabled if empty lines should remain part of the shuffled result.
  3. Shuffle the lines — Select Shuffle Lines to randomly rearrange the complete lines.
  4. Use the result — Copy the shuffled text or download it as a plain text file.

Shuffle Lines Online

Shuffling lines is a simple way to randomise the order of line-based information. For example, a list containing “Apple”, “Banana”, “Cherry” and “Orange” can be rearranged into a different sequence without changing the spelling or contents of any individual item. This can save time when a list needs to be presented in an unpredictable or varied order.

A line shuffle is different from reversing lines or sorting text. Reversing always places the final line first and follows the original sequence backwards, while sorting uses a defined ordering such as alphabetical or numerical order. Shuffling instead uses randomisation to produce a new sequence.

What Can You Use a Line Shuffler For?

A line shuffler can be useful for randomising lists of names, questions, choices, tasks, test entries, ideas, products, data records and other line-by-line content. It can also be useful when preparing material where the original order should not determine which item appears first.

Shuffle Lines vs Reverse Lines

Shuffle Lines produces a random order, whereas Reverse Lines produces a predictable order by moving the final line to the beginning and continuing backwards. If you need a specific reverse sequence, use a line-reversal tool. If you want a randomly rearranged sequence, Shuffle Lines is the appropriate option.

Shuffle Lines Options and Limitations

The tool uses a browser-based randomisation process to rearrange the lines. Each complete line is treated as one item, so the text within an individual line is not split or altered. Repeated lines are treated as separate entries and can appear in any position in the resulting sequence.

Blank lines are preserved by default and are included in the shuffle. If Preserve blank lines is disabled, empty lines are removed before the remaining lines are randomised. The tool does not assign permanent or cryptographically secure random positions, so it should not be used for security-sensitive random number generation or cryptographic purposes.

You can shuffle the same input multiple times to generate different orders. Because the result is generated in your browser, your text does not need to be sent to a remote server. Very large inputs may be limited by the available memory and processing performance of your browser and device.
