Sort Lines Numerically
Sort numbers and number-based text lines numerically online for free. Arrange values from smallest to largest or largest to smallest directly in your browser.
Sort Lines Numerically
Paste your numbers or number-based lines below, choose the sorting options, then select Sort Lines to arrange them by numeric value.
What Is Sort Lines Numerically?
Sort Lines Numerically is a free online text tool that arranges separate lines according to their numeric value. Unlike an alphabetical text sorter, it compares numbers as numbers, so values such as 2, 10 and 100 are placed in their proper numerical order rather than being treated simply as text.
The tool is useful for organising lists of numbers, measurements, prices, scores, identifiers and other line-based data. You can sort from smallest to largest or largest to smallest, remove duplicate lines and choose whether lines without a valid number should be ignored.
Why Use Sort Lines Numerically?
Alphabetical sorting can produce unexpected results when a list contains numbers. Numerical sorting compares the numeric values instead, making it easier to organise number-based lists accurately and consistently.
Smallest to Largest
Arrange numeric values in ascending order, starting with the lowest value.
Largest to Smallest
Reverse the numerical order so the highest value appears first.
Decimals Supported
Sort decimal values such as 1.5, 2.75 and 10.25 according to their actual numeric value.
Negative Numbers
Negative values are compared numerically, allowing values below zero to be correctly positioned.
Duplicate Removal
Optionally remove repeated identical lines before the numerical sorting process is completed.
Copy or Download
Copy the sorted result to your clipboard or save it as a plain-text file for later use.
How to Use Sort Lines Numerically
Sorting a list of numbers is straightforward. Enter one value per line and choose the options required for your result.
- Enter your values — Paste or type your numbers into the input box, using a separate line for each value.
- Choose the sorting options — Select smallest to largest or largest to smallest, then enable duplicate removal or invalid-line handling if required.
- Sort the lines — Select Sort Lines to arrange the values according to their numeric value.
- Copy or download the result — Use Copy Result to copy the sorted list or Download Result to save it as a text file.
Sort Numbers Online by Numeric Value
Numerical sorting is different from alphabetical sorting because numbers need to be compared according to their actual values. For example, alphabetical sorting may place 100 before 20 because it compares the first characters. Numerical sorting recognises that 20 is smaller than 100 and therefore places the values in their mathematical order.
This makes a numerical line sorter useful for lists containing prices, scores, measurements, quantities, rankings, version-like values and other data where the numeric value determines the required order. Each line is processed separately, making the tool particularly convenient for plain-text lists.
Sorting Integers, Decimals and Negative Numbers
The sorter supports standard integer and decimal values, including negative numbers. For example, a list containing -10, 5, 2.5, 0 and 100 can be arranged correctly according to numeric value. Negative values are placed below positive values, while decimal values are compared according to their numerical magnitude.
Why Numerical Sorting Is Different From Alphabetical Sorting
Alphabetical sorting treats each line primarily as text, whereas numerical sorting interprets a numeric value from each line for comparison. This distinction is important for lists containing multiple-digit numbers because alphabetical order does not necessarily match numerical order. A numerical sorter is therefore better suited to data where the numbers themselves determine the correct sequence.
Sort Lines Numerically Options and Limitations
The tool expects each line to contain a value that can be interpreted as a standard JavaScript number, including integers, decimals and negative numbers. When a line contains additional text rather than a directly recognisable numeric value, it may be treated as invalid. Enable Ignore lines without a valid number if you want such lines excluded from the result.
Duplicate removal compares the complete input lines rather than attempting to determine whether different representations have the same numeric value. For example, two differently formatted lines are not automatically considered identical simply because they may represent the same number. Sorting is performed locally in your browser, and your input is not uploaded to a server by this tool.
