What Is a Speed Calculator?

A speed calculator is a tool for determining how quickly something travels based on the distance covered and the time taken. It can also work backwards to calculate distance when speed and time are known, or travel time when distance and speed are known.

This calculator is useful for driving and journey planning, comparing travel times, checking average speeds, solving distance-speed-time problems and converting between kilometres per hour and miles per hour.

Why Use Speed Calculator?

The calculator handles the three fundamental distance, speed and time relationships in one place, while automatically converting the result between common metric and imperial speed units.

1

Calculate Speed

Determine speed from a known distance and travel time.

2

Calculate Distance

Find the distance travelled when speed and time are known.

3

Calculate Travel Time

Work out how long a journey takes from its distance and speed.

4

Kilometres and Miles

Use kilometres or miles as your distance unit.

5

Flexible Time Units

Enter travel time in hours, minutes or seconds.

6

Instant Conversion

View calculated speed in both kilometres per hour and miles per hour.

How to Use Speed Calculator

Select the value you want to calculate, enter the other known values and choose the appropriate units before calculating your result.

  1. Choose what to calculate — Select Speed, Distance or Travel Time from the calculation menu.
  2. Enter the known values — Enter the distance, travel time or speed values required for your selected calculation.
  3. Select your units — Choose kilometres or miles for distance and hours, minutes or seconds for time. Select km/h or mph for speed.
  4. Calculate the result — Select Calculate Speed to display the requested result along with equivalent speed, distance and time information where applicable.

How to Calculate Speed, Distance and Travel Time

The basic relationship between speed, distance and time is simple: speed equals distance divided by time. If you know how far a vehicle travels and how long the journey takes, dividing the distance by the travel time gives the average speed for that journey. The units must be compatible, so a distance in kilometres divided by hours produces kilometres per hour.

The same relationship can be rearranged to calculate the other two values. Distance equals speed multiplied by time, while travel time equals distance divided by speed. These formulas are useful for estimating journeys, checking travel calculations and understanding how changes in speed affect the time required to cover a given distance.

Speed Formula

The standard speed formula is speed = distance ÷ time. For example, travelling 120 kilometres in 2 hours gives an average speed of 60 km/h. The calculator converts this result to approximately 37.3 mph as well, allowing metric and imperial values to be compared easily.

What Affects Travel Speed and Journey Time?

Actual journey time can be affected by traffic, road conditions, speed limits, stops, congestion, weather and changes in driving speed. A calculated average speed represents the overall distance divided by the overall time and may therefore be lower than the vehicle's maximum or cruising speed. For real journeys, use realistic average speeds rather than assuming the vehicle will maintain its maximum speed throughout.

Speed Calculator Accuracy and Limitations

This calculator performs mathematical calculations using the values and units you provide. The results are accurate for those inputs, but a calculated travel speed or time should not be interpreted as a guarantee of real-world journey conditions.

For journey planning, remember that average speed can be affected by stops, traffic, road layouts, speed restrictions and other delays. The calculator does not account for these external factors. When calculating an average speed, use the total journey distance and the total journey time, including any relevant stops, to obtain a meaningful average.

Frequently Asked Questions

A speed calculator determines speed from distance and travel time. It can also calculate the required distance or travel time when the other two values are known.
The basic speed formula is speed = distance ÷ time. The units of the result depend on the distance and time units used in the calculation.
Yes. Select distance as the value to calculate, then enter the speed and travel time. The calculator will determine the distance travelled.
Yes. Select travel time as the value to calculate, then enter the distance and speed. The calculator will determine the required travel time.
Average speed is the total distance travelled divided by the total time taken. It does not necessarily equal the average of two or more individual speed readings.
You can calculate speed using kilometres or miles for distance and hours, minutes or seconds for time. The calculator provides results in both kilometres per hour and miles per hour.
