What Is Split Text Into Lines?
Split Text Into Lines is a free online text formatting tool that takes text containing multiple items and places those items onto separate lines. It is designed for situations where information is currently separated by commas, spaces, semicolons, pipes, tabs or another delimiter but needs to be converted into a line-by-line format.
The tool is useful for preparing lists, keywords, names, values, copied data, search terms, product information and other text for documents, spreadsheets, forms, databases and other applications. You can choose how many items should appear on each output line, including one item per line.
Why Use Split Text Into Lines?
Manually converting a long comma-separated or otherwise delimited list into individual lines can be repetitive and prone to formatting mistakes. Split Text Into Lines automates the process while giving you control over the delimiter and resulting line structure.
Split Text Quickly
Convert a long sequence of delimited text into organised lines without manually inserting every line break.
Multiple Separators
Split text using commas, spaces, semicolons, pipes, tabs or a custom separator of your choice.
Control Line Size
Choose exactly how many detected items should appear on each output line.
Clean Whitespace
Optionally remove surrounding spaces and tabs from each item before creating the final lines.
Handle Empty Items
Ignore empty sections created by repeated separators when you need a cleaner line-based result.
Copy or Download
Copy the finished text directly to your clipboard or download the result as a plain text file.
How to Use Split Text Into Lines
Convert your text into organised lines by entering the content and selecting the formatting options that match your data.
- Enter your text — Paste or type the text you want to divide into separate lines.
- Choose the separator — Select the character or delimiter that currently separates your items, or enter a custom separator.
- Set the number of items per line — Enter how many items should appear on each output line. Use 1 to create one item per line.
- Split and use the result — Click Split Text, then copy the formatted result or download it as a text file.
Split Text Into Lines Online
Splitting text into lines is useful whenever a collection of items is stored as a single piece of text but needs to be displayed or processed line by line. A comma-separated list such as “Apple, Banana, Orange, Grapes” can quickly be converted into four separate lines, making it easier to paste into a spreadsheet column, document or form.
The tool does not need to interpret the meaning of your text. It identifies the separator you specify, divides the input into individual items and then places those items into lines according to your chosen line size. This makes it suitable for many simple text-cleaning and formatting tasks.
Split Text Into One Item Per Line
Setting Items per line to 1 creates one item on each output line. This is particularly useful when you have a comma-separated list, keyword list, collection of names or other delimited data that needs to be converted into a vertical list.
Split Text Into Groups of Multiple Items
You can also place several items on each line. For example, setting Items per line to 3 turns a sequence of items into groups of three, with a new line created after each group. This can be useful when preparing text for structured layouts or organising lists into smaller groups.
Split Text Into Lines: Options and Limitations
The tool treats the selected separator as the boundary between items. For example, selecting a comma means each comma separates one item from the next. If the input uses a separator that also appears naturally inside the content, those occurrences will also be treated as separators.
Whitespace trimming is optional. When enabled, spaces and tabs around each detected item are removed. When disabled, the original surrounding whitespace is retained. Empty items can also be retained by disabling the Ignore empty items option. Processing takes place locally in your browser and does not require your text to be uploaded to a server.
