What Is a Standard Deviation Calculator?
A standard deviation calculator is a mathematical tool that determines how widely a set of numerical values is spread around its mean. Standard deviation is commonly used in statistics to measure the amount of variation or dispersion within a dataset.
This calculator can be used for both population and sample datasets. It calculates the mean, variance and standard deviation from the values entered, making it useful for students, researchers, analysts, teachers and anyone working with statistical data.
Why Use the Standard Deviation Calculator?
The calculator performs the standard deviation calculation automatically and provides the key statistical values needed to understand the spread of a dataset.
Population Standard Deviation
Calculate standard deviation for a complete population using the population standard deviation formula.
Sample Standard Deviation
Calculate sample standard deviation using n − 1 as the denominator when estimating population variability from a sample.
Mean Calculation
View the arithmetic mean of the values entered into the calculator.
Variance Calculation
See the variance used to determine the standard deviation of the dataset.
Flexible Data Entry
Enter values using commas, spaces, semicolons or separate lines, making it easy to work with different datasets.
Free and Browser-Based
Perform standard deviation calculations directly in your browser without installing additional software.
How to Use the Standard Deviation Calculator
Enter the numerical dataset into the calculator and select the type of standard deviation required.
- Enter your values — Type or paste the numbers you want to analyse into the input box.
- Choose the calculation type — Select Population if the values represent the entire population, or Sample if they represent a sample from a larger population.
- Calculate the result — Select Calculate Standard Deviation to process the dataset.
- Review the results — View the number of values, mean, variance and calculated standard deviation.
How Is Standard Deviation Calculated?
Standard deviation measures the typical amount by which values differ from the mean of a dataset. The calculation begins by finding the arithmetic mean, then determining how far each value is from that mean. Those differences are squared, averaged and finally converted back to the original unit by taking the square root.
The formula used depends on whether the data represents a complete population or a sample. For a population, the sum of the squared differences from the mean is divided by the number of values. For a sample, it is divided by one less than the number of values.
Population Standard Deviation Formula
The population standard deviation is calculated as σ = √(Σ(x − μ)² / N), where σ is the population standard deviation, x represents each value, μ is the population mean and N is the total number of values.
Sample Standard Deviation Formula
The sample standard deviation is calculated as s = √(Σ(x − x̄)² / (n − 1)), where s is the sample standard deviation, x represents each value, x̄ is the sample mean and n is the number of values in the sample. Using n − 1 helps provide an unbiased estimate of population variance from a sample.
Understanding Standard Deviation Results
A standard deviation close to zero means the values are clustered relatively close to the mean. A larger standard deviation indicates that the values are more dispersed. The standard deviation is expressed in the same units as the original data, while variance is expressed in squared units.
The choice between population and sample standard deviation is important. Use population standard deviation when the dataset includes every member of the population being studied. Use sample standard deviation when the available values represent a subset of a larger population. The calculator performs the calculation entirely in your browser and does not require the dataset to be uploaded to a server.
