What Is a Statistics Calculator?
A statistics calculator is an online tool for analysing a numerical dataset and calculating common descriptive statistics. Depending on the dataset, statistics can help describe its centre, spread and overall distribution.
This calculator provides several commonly used measurements, including the mean, median, mode, range, minimum, maximum, variance and standard deviation. Enter the values in a dataset and the calculations are performed directly in your browser.
Why Use the Statistics Calculator?
Calculating statistics manually can involve several separate formulas. This calculator combines common descriptive statistics in one place and provides the results immediately.
Mean and Median
Calculate the arithmetic mean and median of your dataset automatically.
Mode Detection
Identify the most frequently occurring value or values in the dataset.
Range Analysis
Find the minimum, maximum and difference between the highest and lowest values.
Variance
Calculate both population and sample variance for the supplied dataset.
Standard Deviation
Calculate population and sample standard deviation to measure data dispersion.
Browser-Based
Calculations are performed directly in your browser without requiring an account or server-side processing.
How to Use the Statistics Calculator
Follow these steps to calculate descriptive statistics for a dataset.
- Enter your data — Type or paste your numerical values into the dataset field.
- Separate the values — Use commas, spaces or line breaks between individual numbers.
- Calculate the statistics — Select Calculate Statistics to process the dataset.
- Review the results — The calculator displays the count, sum, mean, median, mode, range, variance and standard deviation.
Mean, Median, Mode and Standard Deviation Calculator
Descriptive statistics are used to summarise numerical data. The mean gives the arithmetic average, the median identifies the middle value after the data has been sorted, and the mode identifies the value or values that occur most frequently. The range shows the difference between the largest and smallest values.
Variance and standard deviation describe how widely values are distributed around the mean. A smaller standard deviation generally indicates that values are closer to the mean, while a larger standard deviation indicates greater dispersion.
How Is the Mean Calculated?
The mean is calculated by adding every value in the dataset and dividing the total by the number of values. For example, the mean of 4, 6 and 8 is (4 + 6 + 8) ÷ 3 = 6.
Population vs Sample Standard Deviation
Population variance divides the sum of squared differences from the mean by the number of values, n. Sample variance divides by n − 1 and is commonly used when a dataset represents a sample drawn from a larger population. Standard deviation is the square root of the corresponding variance.
Understanding the Statistics Results
The calculator accepts positive numbers, negative numbers and decimal values. It calculates exact results using JavaScript numerical calculations and displays values rounded to a practical number of decimal places for readability.
For a dataset containing a single value, population statistics can still be calculated, but sample variance and sample standard deviation are undefined because a sample requires at least two observations. If multiple values share the highest frequency, the calculator reports all of those values as the mode.
