Surface Area Calculator
Calculate the surface area of common three-dimensional shapes including cubes, cuboids, spheres, cylinders, cones and pyramids.
Surface Area Calculator
Select a shape, enter its measurements, choose a unit and calculate the total surface area instantly.
What Is a Surface Area Calculator?
A surface area calculator determines the total area covering the outside of a three-dimensional geometric object. Unlike perimeter, which measures the distance around a two-dimensional shape, surface area measures the combined area of every external face or curved surface of a solid object.
This calculator can be used for common shapes such as cubes, cuboids, spheres, cylinders, cones, triangular prisms and square-based pyramids. It is useful for geometry exercises, mathematical calculations, planning, estimating material requirements and checking manual calculations.
Why Use Surface Area Calculator?
Calculating surface area manually can require several stages, particularly when a solid has multiple faces or a curved surface. This calculator applies the appropriate mathematical formula automatically after you enter the required measurements.
Multiple 3D Shapes
Calculate surface area for seven common geometric solids using shape-specific formulas.
Instant Results
Enter the measurements and receive the calculated surface area immediately.
Flexible Units
Use millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres, inches, feet or yards for your measurements.
Formula Display
See the formula used for the selected shape alongside the resulting calculation.
Input Validation
The calculator checks that measurements are positive and that required geometric conditions are satisfied.

How to Use the Surface Area Calculator
Select the appropriate three-dimensional shape and enter each measurement requested by the calculator. The result is displayed in square units corresponding to your selected measurement unit.
- Select a shape — Choose the cube, cuboid, sphere, cylinder, cone, triangular prism or square-based pyramid option.
- Enter the measurements — Enter each required length, radius, height or slant height using the same unit.
- Choose the unit — Select the unit that matches the measurements you entered.
- Calculate the surface area — Select “Calculate Surface Area” to display the result, formula and calculation.
How to Calculate Surface Area
The formula for surface area depends on the shape of the three-dimensional object. A cube has six identical square faces, so its surface area is 6s², where s is the length of one edge. A cuboid has three pairs of rectangular faces, giving a surface area of 2(lw + lh + wh), where l is length, w is width and h is height.
Curved solids use different formulas. The surface area of a sphere is 4πr², while the total surface area of a cylinder is 2πr² + 2πrh. A cone uses πr² + πrl, where r is the radius and l is the slant height. The calculator applies the relevant formula automatically based on the shape selected.
Surface Area Formulas for Common Shapes
For a triangular prism, the total surface area is the sum of the two triangular ends and the three rectangular faces. For a square-based pyramid, the total surface area consists of the square base plus the four triangular faces. The calculator asks for the measurements needed to apply these formulas directly.
Why Surface Area Uses Square Units
Surface area measures a two-dimensional area even though the object itself is three-dimensional. Consequently, the result is expressed in square units. For example, a measurement entered in centimetres produces a surface area in square centimetres (cm²), while measurements in metres produce square metres (m²).
Surface Area Calculation Information
Use consistent units for every measurement in a calculation. Mixing centimetres and metres, for example, without first converting them can produce an incorrect result. The calculator does not automatically convert individual measurements between units; the selected unit is the unit assumed for every value entered.
Results are calculated using standard mathematical surface area formulas and can include decimal values. For a cone, enter the slant height rather than the vertical height because the total surface area formula requires the slant height. For a sphere, enter the radius rather than the diameter. All calculations are performed locally in your browser.
