What Is a Temperature Calculator?

A temperature calculator is an online tool that converts a temperature from one measurement scale into equivalent values on other temperature scales. This calculator supports Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin, three commonly used temperature scales.

Temperature conversions are useful when working with weather information, scientific measurements, cooking instructions, engineering data, educational materials and international sources that use different temperature units.

Why Use the Temperature Calculator?

This free temperature calculator provides immediate conversions without requiring you to perform the formulas manually. Enter one temperature and the calculator displays the corresponding values in all three supported scales.

How to Use the Temperature Calculator

Use the calculator to convert a known temperature into Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin values.

  1. Enter a temperature — Type the temperature you want to convert into the Temperature field.
  2. Select the unit — Choose Celsius, Fahrenheit or Kelvin to identify the unit of your entered value.
  3. Calculate the result — Select Calculate to convert the temperature.
  4. Review the conversions — The calculator displays the equivalent temperature in all three supported scales.

Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin Temperature Conversion

Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin measure temperature using different scales. Celsius is widely used for everyday temperatures in most countries, including the United Kingdom. Fahrenheit is commonly used for everyday temperature measurements in the United States. Kelvin is primarily used in scientific and technical applications.

The relationship between the scales is fixed, allowing a temperature to be converted mathematically from one unit to another. This calculator performs those conversions automatically and presents the three equivalent values together.

Celsius to Fahrenheit and Kelvin

To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply the Celsius value by 9/5 and add 32. To convert Celsius to Kelvin, add 273.15. For example, 20 °C is equivalent to 68 °F and 293.15 K.

Fahrenheit and Kelvin Conversion

Fahrenheit can be converted to Celsius by subtracting 32 and multiplying by 5/9. Kelvin is obtained by adding 273.15 to the Celsius value. For example, 32 °F corresponds to 0 °C and 273.15 K.

Temperature Conversion Formulas

The calculator uses the following standard conversion formulas:

Conversion Formula
Celsius to Fahrenheit °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
Fahrenheit to Celsius °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
Celsius to Kelvin K = °C + 273.15
Kelvin to Celsius °C = K − 273.15
Fahrenheit to Kelvin K = (°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15
Kelvin to Fahrenheit °F = (K − 273.15) × 9/5 + 32

Kelvin is an absolute temperature scale and starts at absolute zero. A temperature below 0 K is not permitted, so the calculator validates Kelvin input and prevents results below absolute zero.

Frequently Asked Questions

Enter a temperature, select Celsius, Fahrenheit or Kelvin, and select Calculate. The calculator displays the equivalent value in all three temperature scales.
To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply the Celsius temperature by 9/5 and add 32. The formula is °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32.
Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature and multiply the result by 5/9. The formula is °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9.
Add 273.15 to the Celsius temperature. The formula is K = °C + 273.15.
Yes. Celsius and Fahrenheit values below zero can be entered. Kelvin values cannot be below 0 K because 0 K represents absolute zero.
Absolute zero is 0 K, equivalent to −273.15 °C and −459.67 °F. It represents the theoretical lower limit of temperature.
