Text Truncator
Truncate text online by character or word count, preserve whole words and add an optional ellipsis or custom ending.
Text Truncator
Paste your text, choose a character or word limit, configure the ending and select Truncate Text to create the shortened result.
What Is a Text Truncator?
A Text Truncator shortens a piece of text to a defined length. The limit can be measured in characters or words, making the tool useful when content needs to fit within a specific space or maximum length.
Text truncation is commonly used for previews, descriptions, summaries, user interface labels, database fields, social content, search results and other situations where displaying the complete original text is unnecessary or would take up too much space.
Why Use the Text Truncator?
The YesTools Text Truncator provides flexible controls for shortening text while giving you control over how the result ends and whether words should remain intact.
Character Limits
Set an exact maximum character count when your text needs to fit a defined character limit.
Word Limits
Shorten text according to the number of words instead of individual characters.
Whole Words
Prevent words from being cut in half when using character-based truncation.
Custom Endings
Add an ellipsis or create your own ending to indicate that additional text has been omitted.

View input and output character and word counts while working with your text.
Browser Processing
Process your text directly in the browser without an account or server-side processing.
How to Use the Text Truncator
Use the controls in the tool to choose the type of limit and the way the shortened text should end.
- Enter your text — Paste or type the content you want to shorten into the input box.
- Choose the limit type — Select Characters or Words depending on how you want the length measured.
- Set the maximum length — Enter the maximum number of characters or words allowed in the result.
- Truncate the text — Choose your ending and whole-word preference, then select Truncate Text to generate the result.
Truncate Text Online by Characters or Words
Text truncation is useful whenever content has to fit within a defined space or length. Instead of manually deleting words or characters, you can specify the required limit and let the Text Truncator produce a shortened version. This is particularly useful for descriptions, previews, interface elements and content fields with maximum lengths.
The YesTools Text Truncator supports both character-based and word-based limits. Character limits are useful when a system imposes a precise maximum number of characters, while word limits can be more suitable when readability and approximate content length are more important than an exact character count.
Truncate Text Without Cutting Words
When a character limit falls in the middle of a word, truncating at the exact character position can produce an incomplete word. The whole-word option avoids this by moving the truncation point back to the previous word boundary. This can produce a more natural-looking result, although the final result may contain fewer characters than the requested maximum.
Add an Ellipsis or Custom Ending
A suffix can make it clear that the displayed text is only a shortened version of the original. The tool can add an ellipsis automatically or use a custom ending such as three dots, a label or another short string. When using a character limit, the ending is accounted for within the maximum length.
Text Truncator Information
Character-based truncation counts spaces, punctuation and other characters in the supplied text. If an ending is enabled, its characters are included within the selected character limit. If the requested limit is shorter than the ending itself, the ending is shortened so that the result does not exceed the selected maximum.
Word-based truncation counts whitespace-separated words. The optional ending is added after the selected number of words. The tool processes text locally in your browser and does not require registration or an account.
