What Is a Text Unindenter?

A Text Unindenter is an online formatting tool designed to remove unwanted indentation from the beginning of text lines. It can remove leading spaces, leading tabs or both from an entire block of multiline text in a single operation.

Unindenting is useful when text has been copied from code editors, documents, webpages, emails or other formatted sources and contains more indentation than required. Instead of manually deleting whitespace from every line, the Text Unindenter processes the entire block consistently.

How to Use Text Unindenter

Use the Text Unindenter to remove unwanted indentation from a single line or an entire block of text.

1. Enter your text — Paste or type the text containing the indentation you want to remove.
2. Choose what to remove — Select all leading spaces and tabs, spaces only, tabs only or one leading indentation level.
3. Choose additional cleanup — Decide how whitespace-only lines should be handled and optionally remove trailing whitespace.
4. Unindent and copy — Click Unindent Text, review the result and use Copy Result to copy the cleaned text.

Remove Text Indentation Online

Text indentation is created by placing spaces or tab characters before the visible content of a line. Although indentation is useful for organising source code, lists and structured documents, copied text can sometimes contain unnecessary leading whitespace. Removing that indentation can make the text easier to reuse in another application or formatting environment.

You can completely remove leading spaces and tabs, target only one type of whitespace, or remove a single indentation level while retaining deeper indentation. This provides more control than simply deleting spaces manually.

Remove Leading Spaces from Text

When text contains unwanted spaces at the beginning of each line, select "Leading spaces only" to remove those space characters. This is useful when tabs in the original content need to remain untouched or when the text uses spaces for indentation.

Remove Leading Tabs from Text

Select "Leading tabs only" when the indentation consists of tab characters. This removes tabs from the beginning of applicable lines without removing ordinary spaces elsewhere in the line.

Text Unindentation Options

The Text Unindenter operates on each line independently. The "All leading spaces and tabs" option removes every space and tab character occurring before the first non-whitespace character. The "One leading indentation level" option removes one leading space or tab where present, allowing deeper indentation to remain.

Whitespace-only lines can either be left exactly as they are or have their leading indentation removed. The optional trailing-whitespace setting removes spaces and tabs at the end of each line as well. Text content, punctuation, internal spacing and line order are not otherwise changed.
