Trip Time Calculator
Calculate travel time from distance and average speed using common units such as kilometres, miles, km/h and mph.
Trip Time Calculator
Enter your trip distance and average speed to calculate the estimated travel time.
What Is a Trip Time Calculator?
A trip time calculator estimates how long a journey will take when you know the total distance and the average speed. It uses the basic relationship between distance, speed and time to determine the expected travel duration.
This can be useful when planning road trips, estimating journey durations, comparing travel speeds, checking approximate arrival times or working out how long a vehicle journey may take under consistent conditions.
Why Use the Trip Time Calculator?
This free calculator makes it quick to estimate journey duration while allowing distance and speed to be entered using different common units.
Multiple Distance Units
Enter distances in kilometres, miles, metres or feet.
Common Speed Units
Calculate trip time using km/h, mph, metres per second or knots.
Automatic Conversion
Distance and speed units are automatically converted into compatible measurements before calculation.
Hours, Minutes and Seconds
View the calculated duration as total hours, minutes and seconds.
Instant Calculation
Results are calculated immediately in your browser without sending the calculation to a server.
Free to Use
Use the calculator as often as required without registration or payment.
How to Use the Trip Time Calculator
Enter the distance you expect to travel and the average speed you expect to maintain. The calculator will determine the estimated travel time.
- Enter the distance — Enter the total distance of your journey.
- Select the distance unit — Choose kilometres, miles, metres or feet.
- Enter the average speed — Enter the expected average speed and select its unit.
- Calculate the trip time — Click Calculate Trip Time to view the estimated duration in hours, minutes and seconds.
How to Calculate Trip Time
The basic formula for calculating travel time is time = distance ÷ speed. The distance and speed must use compatible units. For example, a journey of 200 kilometres travelled at an average speed of 100 km/h takes 2 hours.
The same calculation can be performed using miles and mph. For example, travelling 150 miles at an average speed of 50 mph gives a calculated travel time of 3 hours. The calculator handles the required unit conversion automatically when different compatible units are selected.
Calculating Travel Time in Hours and Minutes
If the result contains a fractional number of hours, the decimal portion can be converted into minutes. For example, 2.5 hours represents 2 hours and 30 minutes. This calculator provides the total duration in hours, minutes and seconds so the result can be interpreted easily.
Average Speed and Journey Duration
Trip time calculations depend on average speed rather than a vehicle's maximum or instantaneous speed. If a vehicle travels at different speeds during a journey, using an appropriate average speed generally gives a more useful estimate of the overall travel duration.
Trip Time Calculator Accuracy and Limitations
The mathematical result is based entirely on the distance and average speed entered. It assumes that the specified average speed can be maintained for the duration of the trip and therefore does not automatically account for traffic, junctions, roadworks, fuel stops, rest breaks, weather, parking or other delays.
For real-world journey planning, the calculated time should therefore be treated as an estimate. Actual travel time can be longer or shorter depending on the route, traffic conditions, driving conditions and stops made during the journey.
