Uptime Calculator
Calculate uptime percentage, downtime and service availability from a total measurement period and unavailable time.
Uptime Calculator
Enter the total measurement period and downtime to calculate uptime percentage, availability and uptime duration.
Uptime Results
Uptime % = ((Total Time − Downtime) ÷ Total Time) × 100
What Is an Uptime Calculator?
An Uptime Calculator is a tool for calculating how much of a specified measurement period a website, server, application, network or other service was operational and available. Uptime is commonly expressed as a percentage, allowing service availability to be measured consistently across different time periods.
The calculator uses the total measurement period and the amount of downtime to determine the resulting uptime percentage. It can be useful for checking service-level calculations, analysing infrastructure performance, understanding availability targets and converting downtime measurements into an easy-to-understand percentage.
Why Use an Uptime Calculator?
Calculating uptime manually can involve converting between different time units and working with very small percentages. This calculator handles those calculations automatically and provides both the uptime percentage and the corresponding downtime percentage.
Uptime Percentage
Calculate the percentage of the measurement period during which the service was operational.
Downtime Percentage
See the percentage of the total period represented by unavailable or downtime.
Flexible Time Units
Enter total time and downtime using seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months or years.
Availability Result
View a visual availability indicator alongside the calculated uptime percentage.
Instant Calculation
Perform the calculation immediately without manually converting time units or calculating percentages.
Free Online Tool
Calculate uptime directly in your browser without an account, software installation or subscription.
How to Use the Uptime Calculator
Enter the complete measurement period and the amount of downtime, selecting the appropriate unit for each value.
- Enter the total time — Enter the complete period over which uptime is being measured.
- Select the total time unit — Choose seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months or years.
- Enter the downtime — Enter the amount of time during the measurement period when the service was unavailable and select its unit.
- Calculate uptime — Select Calculate Uptime to see the uptime percentage, downtime percentage, uptime duration and service availability.
Uptime Percentage Calculation Formula
Uptime percentage is calculated by subtracting downtime from the total measurement period, dividing the resulting uptime duration by the total period and multiplying by 100. The formula is Uptime % = ((Total Time − Downtime) ÷ Total Time) × 100.
For example, if a service is measured over 30 days and experiences 0.5 days of downtime, its uptime is 29.5 days. Dividing 29.5 by 30 and multiplying by 100 gives an uptime percentage of approximately 98.3333%.
Understanding 99%, 99.9% and 99.99% Uptime
Uptime percentages can look very close to 100% while representing different amounts of downtime. A service with 99% uptime has 1% downtime, while 99.9% uptime has 0.1% downtime and 99.99% uptime has 0.01% downtime. The practical amount of downtime depends on the measurement period.
Uptime and Service Level Targets
Uptime percentages are frequently used when discussing service reliability and service-level targets. A target such as 99.9% availability establishes a much smaller downtime allowance than a 99% target. When evaluating an actual service, the measurement methodology and agreed monitoring period should also be considered rather than relying on the percentage alone.
Understanding Uptime and Downtime Calculations
This calculator performs a mathematical calculation using the total measurement period and downtime that you provide. It does not monitor websites, servers or applications and does not independently determine whether a service was available. The accuracy of the result therefore depends on the accuracy and consistency of the input measurements.
For calculations involving months and years, the tool uses standardised time conversions rather than a particular calendar month or year. A month is treated as 30 days and a year as 365 days for calculation purposes. If you need an exact calendar-based availability figure, use the actual duration of the relevant dates and enter that period using an appropriate unit.
