URL Decoder
Decode URLs and percent-encoded text by converting encoded characters back into readable text directly in your browser.
URL Decoder
Enter encoded URL text, choose a decoding mode, and decode it instantly in your browser.
Use URL Component when decoding an individual parameter value or a piece of encoded text. It decodes reserved URL characters such as %2F and %3F.
Decoding is performed locally in your browser. Your input does not need to be uploaded to a server for this tool to work.
What Is a URL Decoder?
A URL Decoder is a tool that converts percent-encoded URLs and text back into their readable form. URL encoding is commonly used to represent spaces, special characters and non-ASCII characters safely within URLs. For example, the encoded sequence %20 represents a space, while %3F represents a question mark.
URL decoding is useful when you need to inspect a URL, understand a query parameter, recover readable text from encoded data or troubleshoot how information is being passed between a browser and a web application. Developers, web administrators, SEO professionals and anyone working with web addresses can use a URL Decoder to quickly interpret encoded values.
Why Use URL Decoder?
This free URL Decoder provides a quick way to turn percent-encoded content into readable text without installing software or sending the data to a decoding service.
Instant Decoding
Decode URL-encoded content directly in your browser without waiting for a server response.
Two Decoding Modes
Choose between URL component decoding and full URL decoding depending on the type of content you are working with.
Unicode Support
Valid UTF-8 percent-encoded Unicode characters can be converted back into their original readable characters.
Accurate Results
The tool uses standard browser URL decoding functions to process valid percent-encoded input.
Copy Ready
Copy the decoded result to your clipboard with a single button once processing is complete.
Browser-Based Privacy
Decoding takes place locally in your browser, so the tool does not require your input to be uploaded for processing.
How to Use URL Decoder
Decoding URL-encoded text takes only a few steps. Select the appropriate mode and process the encoded value to produce readable output.
- Enter encoded text — Paste a URL, query parameter or other percent-encoded text into the input box.
- Choose a decoding mode — Select URL Component for an individual encoded value or Full URL for a complete URI.
- Decode the content — Select the Decode URL button to convert valid percent-encoded sequences into their corresponding characters.
- Copy the result — Review the decoded text and copy it to your clipboard when you are ready to use it.
Decode URLs and Percent-Encoded Text Online
URL encoding, also called percent encoding, allows characters to be represented safely within a URL. Characters that have a special meaning in URL syntax or cannot be represented directly may be converted into a percent sign followed by two hexadecimal digits. URL decoding performs the reverse operation, turning those encoded sequences back into their corresponding characters.
For example, a URL containing the text hello world may represent the space as %20. A URL containing a question mark within an encoded component may represent it as %3F. Decoding these sequences makes the underlying value easier to read and understand.
URL Decoding vs URL Encoding
URL encoding converts characters into a URL-safe representation, while URL decoding converts that representation back into characters. Encoding is commonly required when constructing URLs or passing values through query strings. Decoding is commonly used when reading or analysing values that have already been encoded.
URL Component Decoding vs Full URL Decoding
There is an important distinction between decoding an individual URL component and decoding an entire URI. Component decoding is designed to decode encoded characters within a single value and can convert reserved characters such as %2F into /. Full URL decoding is more conservative and preserves characters that have structural meaning within a URI, such as the scheme separators, path separators, query delimiters and fragment marker.
Understanding URL Decoding
URL decoding is not encryption and does not make information more secure. Percent encoding is simply a representation mechanism used by URLs. Anyone with the encoded value and the appropriate decoding rules can generally recover the represented characters.
The decoder processes valid percent-encoded input according to standard browser URL decoding behaviour. If the input contains an incomplete percent sequence, invalid hexadecimal characters or malformed encoded UTF-8 data, the browser may reject it rather than producing an unreliable result. The tool reports decoding errors instead of silently returning potentially misleading output.
URL decoding also does not verify whether a decoded URL exists, whether its destination is safe or whether its content is valid. It only transforms the supplied text. For application/x-www-form-urlencoded data, spaces may be represented by a plus sign (+), which is a form-encoding convention rather than the same thing as percent-encoding a space as %20.
