URL Length Calculator
Calculate the exact length of any URL in characters and bytes with this free online URL Length Calculator.
URL Length Calculator
Enter a URL below to instantly calculate its character count, UTF-8 byte length and other useful measurements.
Paste or type the complete URL you want to measure. The calculator measures the URL exactly as entered.
What Is a URL Length Calculator?
A URL Length Calculator measures how many characters are contained in a web address. This can be useful when checking long URLs that contain paths, query parameters, tracking values, fragments or other information. The calculator also measures the UTF-8 byte length of the URL as entered.
URL length information can be useful for website owners, developers, SEO professionals and anyone working with links. Measuring a URL before publishing or sharing it can help identify unnecessarily long addresses and potential compatibility concerns.
Why Use URL Length Calculator?
This free URL Length Calculator provides several measurements from a single URL without requiring external services or browser extensions.
Character Count
See the total number of characters contained in the URL exactly as it was entered.
UTF-8 Byte Count
Calculate the number of bytes used by the URL when represented as UTF-8 text.
Whitespace Check
Compare the full character count with the number of characters remaining after whitespace is removed.
Instant Results
Calculate URL measurements immediately in your browser without waiting for an external service.
Exact Input Measurement
The calculator measures the URL as entered rather than silently rewriting or shortening it.
Free to Use
Use the URL Length Calculator as often as needed without registration, payment or software installation.
How to Use URL Length Calculator
Calculating the length of a URL takes only a few seconds. Enter the complete address and review the measurements shown by the calculator.
- Enter the URL — Paste or type the complete URL into the input field.
- Calculate the length — Select Calculate URL Length to process the entered address.
- Review the results — Check the character count, UTF-8 byte count and character count without whitespace.
- Reset the tool — Select Reset when you want to remove the current URL and start another calculation.
How to Calculate URL Length
The basic length of a URL is calculated by counting every character in the URL string. This includes the protocol, domain name, path, query string, fragment, punctuation, numbers and other characters. For example, a URL such as https://example.com/products?id=123 is measured as the complete string rather than just the domain name.
The URL Length Calculator also reports UTF-8 byte length. This is useful because some characters can require more than one byte when represented in UTF-8. Percent-encoded sequences are measured exactly as they appear in the input rather than being decoded or changed.
Why Keep URLs Concise?
Short, descriptive URLs are generally easier for people to read, remember, copy and share. They can also make website structures easier to understand. Long URLs are not automatically harmful, but unnecessary query parameters, repeated information and excessive path segments can make addresses difficult to manage.
URL Characters and Encoding
URLs can contain letters, numbers, reserved punctuation and percent-encoded values. A character such as a space may be represented in an encoded URL rather than appearing literally. Because encoding changes the textual representation of a URL, the visible character count can differ from the length of the underlying unencoded value. This calculator measures the exact text supplied by the user.
Understanding URL Length Results
The Characters result is the JavaScript string length of the URL as entered, while UTF-8 Bytes represents the number of bytes required to encode that text using UTF-8. For ordinary ASCII URLs, these two values are normally the same. Characters outside the ASCII range can require multiple UTF-8 bytes.
The calculator does not impose a universal maximum URL length because practical URL limits depend on browsers, servers, web applications, proxies and other systems involved in handling a request. A URL can therefore be technically valid while still causing compatibility issues with a particular system. The tool measures your URL and does not determine whether it will work with every possible platform.
All calculations are performed locally in your browser. The URL does not need to be uploaded to YesTools for the length calculation, making the tool suitable for checking URLs that you do not want to send to an external service.
