VAT Exclusive Calculator
Remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price and calculate the net price and VAT amount using a UK VAT rate.
VAT Exclusive Calculator
Enter a VAT-inclusive price, choose the VAT rate, and calculate the price excluding VAT and the VAT amount.
Enter the final price that already includes VAT.
Enter a VAT percentage between 0% and 100%.
Price excluding VAT = VAT-inclusive price ÷ (1 + VAT rate ÷ 100)
What Is a VAT Exclusive Calculator?
A VAT exclusive calculator works backwards from a VAT-inclusive price to determine the original price before VAT was added. It calculates the net price and separates the VAT component from the final total.
This is useful when you have a price that already includes VAT and need to identify the amount excluding VAT. Businesses, freelancers, consumers and anyone checking prices or invoices can use the calculator to quickly work out the net amount and VAT component.
Why Use the VAT Exclusive Calculator?
Removing VAT manually can be confusing because VAT is calculated as a percentage of the net price rather than simply subtracting the VAT percentage from the gross total. This calculator applies the correct reverse VAT calculation automatically.

How to Use the VAT Exclusive Calculator
Use these four steps to remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price.
- Enter the VAT-inclusive price — Enter the final price in pounds and pence, including VAT.
- Select the VAT rate — Choose 20%, 5%, 0% or select Custom Rate and enter another percentage.
- Click Calculate VAT — The calculator will reverse the VAT calculation and determine the net price.
- Review the results — Check the VAT-inclusive price, price excluding VAT and VAT amount.
How to Remove VAT from a VAT-Inclusive Price
Removing VAT from a price requires a reverse calculation. You cannot simply subtract 20% from a VAT-inclusive price because the VAT percentage is calculated against the net price, not the gross price. Instead, divide the VAT-inclusive amount by one plus the VAT rate expressed as a decimal.
The formula is: price excluding VAT = VAT-inclusive price ÷ (1 + VAT rate ÷ 100). Once the net price has been calculated, subtract it from the original VAT-inclusive price to find the VAT amount.
Removing 20% VAT from a Price
For a VAT-inclusive price with 20% VAT, divide the total by 1.20. For example, £120 including VAT divided by 1.20 gives a net price of £100. The difference between £120 and £100 is £20, which is the VAT amount.
Removing 5% VAT and Other Rates
The same reverse calculation applies to other VAT percentages. For 5% VAT, divide the VAT-inclusive amount by 1.05. For a custom rate, divide the gross amount by 1 plus the selected VAT rate divided by 100.
UK VAT Exclusive Calculation Notes
This calculator performs a mathematical reverse VAT calculation using the rate you select. It does not determine whether VAT applies to a particular product or service, which VAT treatment is legally applicable, or whether a business is required to register for VAT.
Results are displayed to two decimal places to represent pounds and pence. Real invoices and accounting systems can sometimes have small rounding differences depending on whether VAT is calculated per item, per line or on the overall transaction.
