What Is a Velocity Calculator?

A velocity calculator is a tool used to determine how quickly an object changes position over a given amount of time. In its simplest form, velocity is calculated by dividing distance by elapsed time. This makes it useful for working with measurements involving travel, motion and rates of movement.

This calculator can calculate velocity when distance and time are known, as well as calculate distance when velocity and time are known or time when distance and velocity are known. It also handles conversions between common distance, time and velocity units, making it useful for science, engineering, education and everyday calculations.

Why Use the Velocity Calculator?

The calculator provides a straightforward way to solve the basic relationship between velocity, distance and time without requiring manual unit conversions.

1

How to Use the Velocity Calculator

Choose the quantity you need to calculate, provide the other two values, select their units, and then choose the unit for the result.

  1. Choose the calculation. — Select Velocity, Distance or Time from the calculation menu.
  2. Enter the known values. — Enter the two measurements required for the selected calculation.
  3. Select the units. — Choose the appropriate unit for each value and select the desired result unit.
  4. Calculate the result. — Select Calculate to display the result and the calculation used.

Velocity Formula and Calculation

The basic velocity formula is v = d ÷ t, where v represents velocity, d represents distance or displacement, and t represents elapsed time. For example, if an object travels 100 metres in 20 seconds, its average velocity using the basic distance-over-time calculation is 5 metres per second.

The same relationship can be rearranged to calculate either of the other quantities. Distance is calculated with d = v × t, while time is calculated with t = d ÷ v. These equations allow two known values to be used to determine the third.

Velocity, Distance and Time Units

Common velocity units include metres per second (m/s), kilometres per hour (km/h), miles per hour (mph), feet per second (ft/s), knots and centimetres per second (cm/s). Distance can be expressed in metres, kilometres, centimetres, millimetres, miles, yards, feet or inches, while time can be measured in seconds, milliseconds, minutes or hours.

Average Velocity and Direction

In physics, velocity is a vector quantity, meaning it includes both magnitude and direction. The basic calculation on this page focuses on the magnitude of average motion from distance and elapsed time. A complete vector velocity calculation may require displacement and directional information rather than simply the total path travelled.

Velocity Calculator Accuracy and Limitations

The calculator performs mathematical calculations using defined conversion factors for the supported units. Results are displayed according to the precision available from the entered values and JavaScript number calculations. Very large or very small values may be displayed using scientific notation.

The calculation does not account for measurement uncertainty, changes in velocity during the measured interval, acceleration, or other physical factors. When an object changes speed or direction, the calculated value represents the average rate over the specified interval. For scientific or engineering work, use measured quantities and appropriate physical assumptions for the situation being analysed.
