Volume Calculator
Calculate the volume of common three-dimensional shapes including cubes, rectangular prisms, cylinders, spheres, cones, pyramids and triangular prisms.
Volume Calculator
Select a shape, enter its dimensions and choose a unit to calculate its volume instantly.
Volume
Use the same unit for all dimensions. The result is expressed in cubic units, such as cm³, m³, in³ or ft³.
What Is a Volume Calculator?
A volume calculator is an online tool that determines how much three-dimensional space is occupied by an object or shape. The required calculation depends on the shape and its dimensions.
This volume calculator supports several common geometric shapes, making it useful for students, teachers, engineers, designers, builders and anyone who needs to calculate cubic measurements quickly.
Why Use This Volume Calculator?
This calculator provides a simple way to perform common volume calculations without manually applying each mathematical formula.
Multiple Shapes
Calculate the volume of seven commonly used three-dimensional shapes.
Instant Results
Results are calculated immediately in your browser as soon as you submit the dimensions.
Cubic Units
Results are automatically expressed using the appropriate cubic unit based on your selected measurement unit.
Accurate Formulas
The calculator uses standard geometric volume formulas for each supported shape.
Free to Use
Calculate volume online without registration, payment or software installation.
Works in Your Browser
Calculations are performed directly on your device, making the tool convenient for desktop and mobile use.
How to Use the Volume Calculator
Select the appropriate geometric shape and enter all required dimensions using the same unit of measurement.
- Select a shape — Choose the object you want to calculate, such as a cylinder, sphere, cube or rectangular prism.
- Enter the dimensions — Provide the required measurements for the selected shape.
- Choose the unit — Select the unit used for your measurements.
- Calculate the volume — Select Calculate Volume to display the result and the formula used.
How to Calculate Volume
Volume measures the amount of three-dimensional space occupied by an object. It is normally expressed in cubic units because three dimensions are multiplied together. For example, multiplying centimetres by centimetres by centimetres produces cubic centimetres (cm³).
The formula required to calculate volume depends on the shape. A rectangular prism uses its length, width and height, while a cylinder uses its radius and height. Spheres, cones, pyramids and triangular prisms each have their own standard formula.
Rectangular Prism and Cube Volume
The volume of a rectangular prism is calculated by multiplying length by width by height: V = l × w × h. A cube is a special type of rectangular prism where all three dimensions are equal, so its volume can be calculated as V = s³, where s is the side length.
Cylinder, Sphere and Cone Volume
The volume of a cylinder is V = πr²h. A sphere uses V = 4/3πr³, while a cone uses V = 1/3πr²h. In these formulas, r represents the radius and h represents the height.
Volume Measurement and Accuracy
For a correct result, all dimensions entered for a calculation should use the same measurement unit. For example, do not combine centimetres and metres without first converting them to the same unit.
The calculator retains the mathematical precision of its calculations and displays the result to a practical number of decimal places. For measurements that are themselves approximate, the calculated volume should also be treated as an approximation.
