Construction & Home Calculators

Wallpaper Calculator

Calculate how many wallpaper rolls you need using your wall dimensions, wallpaper roll size, pattern repeat, doors, windows and waste allowance.

Bluehost

Wallpaper Calculator

Enter your room dimensions and wallpaper specifications to estimate the number of rolls required.

Room Dimensions

Enter the dimensions of the room. The calculator assumes the walls are rectangular and that all four walls are being wallpapered.

Use 1 if you are wallpapering a single room.

Doors and Windows

Enter the dimensions and quantities of doors and windows that will not be covered with wallpaper.

Wallpaper Roll

Use the dimensions printed on your wallpaper packaging. Pattern repeat is important because additional material may be needed to align repeating designs.

Metres. For a 53 cm roll, enter 0.53.
Metres. For a 10.05 m roll, enter 10.05.
Enter 0 for a plain wallpaper. Otherwise enter the repeat distance in metres.
10% is a useful starting allowance for cutting, fitting and unavoidable waste.

This is an estimate. Always check the wallpaper manufacturer's instructions and allow for the actual pattern repeat, matching requirements, room shape and installation conditions. It is usually safer to have some spare wallpaper available for future repairs.

What Is a Wallpaper Calculator?

A wallpaper calculator is an online tool that estimates how much wallpaper is needed to decorate a room. Instead of relying only on the total wall area, it can account for the dimensions of the wallpaper roll, the height of each wallpaper drop, pattern repeat, doors, windows and an additional waste allowance.

This makes it useful when planning a decorating project before buying wallpaper. Enter the dimensions of the room and the specifications of the wallpaper you intend to use to get an estimate of the number of rolls required.

Why Use a Wallpaper Calculator?

Buying too little wallpaper can result in an unfinished project or difficulty finding an exact matching batch later. Buying substantially more than necessary can unnecessarily increase the cost of a decorating project. A wallpaper calculator provides a practical starting point for estimating the quantity required.

1

Room Dimensions

Calculate wallpaper requirements from the length, width and height of the room.

2

Doors & Windows

Deduct the area occupied by doors and windows instead of treating every wall as completely covered.

3

Roll Specifications

Use the actual width and length of your wallpaper roll for a more useful roll estimate.

4

Pattern Repeat

Account for additional drop length caused by repeating wallpaper patterns that need to be aligned.

5

Waste Allowance

Add an adjustable percentage for cutting, trimming, fitting and other unavoidable material waste.

6

Ceiling Option

Include the ceiling area when wallpaper is being used on both the walls and ceiling.

How to Use the Wallpaper Calculator

Use the calculator before purchasing wallpaper to estimate the number of rolls needed for your decorating project.

  1. Enter the room dimensions — Select metres or feet, then enter the room length, width, height and number of identical rooms.
  2. Enter doors and windows — Add the dimensions and quantities of doors and windows that will not be wallpapered.
  3. Enter the wallpaper specifications — Enter the roll width, roll length and pattern repeat shown on the wallpaper packaging.
  4. Calculate the requirement — Add a waste allowance if required and select the ceiling option if applicable, then choose Calculate Wallpaper to see the estimated number of rolls.

How Much Wallpaper Do I Need?

The amount of wallpaper you need depends on more than the total square area of your walls. Wallpaper is normally installed as vertical drops, so the height of the wall and the length of each roll determine how many complete strips can be cut from a roll. The width of the wallpaper then determines how many strips are required around the room.

For example, a room measuring 5 metres by 4 metres with 2.4 metre high walls has a wall area of 43.2 square metres before openings are deducted. A 10.05 metre long roll can theoretically provide several drops of wallpaper at this height, but a pattern repeat may increase the effective cutting length. The calculator therefore uses the drop length rather than simply dividing total wall area by the nominal area printed on the roll.

Why Wallpaper Pattern Repeat Matters

Wallpaper with a repeating design often requires each strip to be cut at a longer effective length than the actual wall height. For example, if a wall is 2.4 metres high and the wallpaper has a 0.5 metre pattern repeat, the installer may need to cut strips to a length that accommodates the repeat so adjacent strips line up correctly. This creates additional offcuts compared with plain wallpaper.

How Doors and Windows Affect Wallpaper Requirements

Doors and windows reduce the surface that needs to be covered, but they do not always eliminate the need for complete wallpaper drops. Wallpaper around openings still has to be cut and positioned carefully, and some offcuts may not be reusable. For this reason, the calculator deducts the opening area while also allowing an additional waste allowance.

Wallpaper Calculation Tips

Always use the exact roll dimensions and pattern repeat supplied by the wallpaper manufacturer. Different products can have substantially different roll widths, lengths and pattern-matching requirements, so a generic roll size should not be assumed when purchasing material.

The calculator provides an estimate for reasonably regular rooms. Sloping ceilings, alcoves, chimney breasts, unusually shaped rooms, multiple wall heights and complicated architectural features can affect the actual quantity required. When a particular wallpaper has strict pattern-matching instructions, the manufacturer's calculation guidance should take priority.

Frequently Asked Questions

The wallpaper calculator estimates the number of rolls required by calculating the total wall area, deducting doors and windows, and then working out how many complete wallpaper drops can be cut from each roll. It also accounts for the wallpaper width, roll length, pattern repeat and waste allowance.
A repeating pattern can require each strip to be cut longer so that the design lines up with adjacent strips. This can produce larger offcuts and reduce the number of usable drops obtained from a roll, particularly with large pattern repeats.
Yes. Enter the dimensions and quantities of doors and windows to deduct their surface area from the total wall area. The remaining area is used for the wallpaper estimate, while the waste allowance provides additional material for cutting and fitting.
Enter the actual roll width and length shown on the wallpaper packaging. Wallpaper rolls are not all the same size, so using the manufacturer's dimensions will produce a more relevant calculation.
An additional allowance is useful for cutting, trimming, pattern matching, installation mistakes and future repairs. This calculator uses a default 10% waste allowance, which you can change to suit the project and wallpaper.
No. The result is an estimate based on the dimensions and wallpaper specifications entered. Actual requirements can vary because of room shape, sloping ceilings, corners, alcoves, pattern matching, installation technique and manufacturer instructions.
