Wavelength Calculator
Calculate wavelength, frequency or wave speed using the standard wave equation.
Wavelength Calculator
Choose the quantity to calculate, enter the two known values, select their units, and calculate the result.
What Is a Wavelength Calculator?
A Wavelength Calculator uses the relationship between wavelength, wave speed and frequency to calculate an unknown wave quantity when the other two values are known. The standard wave equation is v = fλ, which can be rearranged to calculate wavelength as λ = v ÷ f.
This calculator is useful for physics students, teachers, engineers, technicians and anyone working with wave calculations. It can be used for problems involving sound, electromagnetic radiation, light and other periodic waves where wave speed and frequency are known or need to be determined.
Why Use a Wavelength Calculator?
The relationship between wavelength, frequency and wave speed is straightforward, but calculations can become inconvenient when different units are involved. This calculator performs the required equation and unit conversions automatically.
Calculate Wavelength

Wavelength Formula
The standard relationship between wave speed, frequency and wavelength is v = fλ. Wavelength is represented by λ, wave speed by v, and frequency by f. Rearranging the equation gives λ = v ÷ f for calculating wavelength.
For example, if a wave travels at 340 m/s and has a frequency of 170 Hz, its wavelength is 340 ÷ 170 = 2 m. The same relationship can be rearranged to find frequency or wave speed when those quantities are unknown.
How to Calculate Frequency
Frequency can be calculated by dividing wave speed by wavelength: f = v ÷ λ. For example, a wave travelling at 300 m/s with a wavelength of 2 m has a frequency of 150 Hz. Frequency describes how many complete cycles occur per second and is measured in hertz.
How to Calculate Wave Speed
Wave speed can be calculated by multiplying frequency by wavelength: v = f × λ. For example, a wave with a frequency of 50 Hz and a wavelength of 4 m has a wave speed of 200 m/s. The appropriate wave speed depends on the type of wave and the medium or conditions in which it travels.
Wavelength Calculator Accuracy and Limitations
The calculator uses the standard wave equation and SI-based conversion factors for supported units. The precision of the result depends on the precision of the values entered. Very large or very small results may be displayed using scientific notation to make them easier to read.
The calculator assumes that the supplied wave speed and frequency or wavelength describe the same wave under the same conditions. It does not determine the physical properties of a medium, dispersion relationships or frequency-dependent changes in wave speed. For electromagnetic waves, the appropriate propagation speed should be used for the medium being considered.
