Weighted Average Calculator
Calculate a weighted average quickly and accurately, with the weighted sum, total weight, count and result shown alongside the calculation.
Weighted Average Calculator
Enter each value and its corresponding weight, choose the number of decimal places and calculate the weighted average.
What Is a Weighted Average Calculator?
A weighted average calculator calculates an average in which individual values have different levels of importance. Instead of treating every value equally, each value is multiplied by its corresponding weight before the weighted results are combined.
Weighted averages are commonly used for grades, assessments, financial calculations, survey data, performance measurements, business analysis and other situations where some values should contribute more to the final average than others.
Why Use Weighted Average Calculator?
This free weighted average calculator makes it easy to combine values with different levels of importance without having to perform each multiplication and division manually.
Accurate Calculation
Calculates the weighted average from each value and its corresponding weight.
Multiple Values
Add as many value and weight pairs as required for your data set.
Flexible Weights
Use percentages, proportions or other non-negative weights according to your calculation.
Decimal Values
Supports decimal values and weights for precise calculations.
Supporting Statistics
Shows the weighted sum, total weight and number of values alongside the final average.
Adjustable Precision
Choose between 0 and 10 decimal places for displaying your results.
How to Use Weighted Average Calculator
Enter each value with its corresponding weight, then calculate the weighted average to see how the different weights affect the final result.
- Enter Values — Add each numerical value to a row in the calculator.
- Enter Weights — Enter the corresponding weight for each value. Weights can be percentages, proportions or other non-negative values.
- Choose Precision — Select between 0 and 10 decimal places for displaying the results.
- Calculate the Average — Click Calculate Weighted Average to see the weighted average, weighted sum and total weight.
How to Calculate a Weighted Average
To calculate a weighted average, multiply every value by its corresponding weight, add the resulting products together, then divide that total by the sum of all weights. The formula is Weighted Average = Sum of (Value × Weight) ÷ Sum of Weights.
For example, suppose a student receives a score of 80 with a weight of 40 and a score of 90 with a weight of 60. The weighted sum is (80 × 40) + (90 × 60) = 8,600, while the total weight is 100. The weighted average is therefore 8,600 ÷ 100 = 86.
What Is a Weighted Mean?
A weighted mean, also called a weighted average, is an average that gives different values different levels of influence. A value with a larger weight contributes more to the final result than a value with a smaller weight.
Weighted Average vs Regular Average
A regular arithmetic average gives every value equal importance. A weighted average allows the importance of each value to vary. For example, if three test scores contribute equally to a final result, a regular average may be appropriate. If one assessment counts for 50% and two others count for 25% each, a weighted average better represents their different contributions.
Understanding Weighted Average Calculator Results
The calculator displays the weighted average, weighted sum, total weight and number of values used. The weighted sum is the combined total of every value multiplied by its corresponding weight. The total weight is the sum of all entered weights.
Weights do not need to add up to 100 as long as they represent the intended relative importance of the values. For example, weights of 20 and 80 produce the same weighted average as weights of 0.2 and 0.8. Weights must be non-negative and their total must be greater than zero. The selected decimal-place setting affects how results are displayed, not the underlying calculation. Values are processed directly in your browser and are not sent to a server by the calculator.
