What Is a Wholesale Margin Calculator?
A wholesale margin calculator is a tool for determining the gross profit and profit margin generated when a product is sold to a wholesale customer. It compares the product cost with the wholesale selling price to show how much profit is made on each unit.
The calculator is useful for wholesalers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and e-commerce businesses when reviewing wholesale pricing. It also calculates markup, allowing businesses to see the relationship between product cost and selling price.
Why Use the Wholesale Margin Calculator?
Wholesale pricing needs to account for the cost of supplying a product while leaving enough gross profit to support the business. This calculator provides the key percentage and monetary figures needed to assess a wholesale price.

How to Calculate Wholesale Profit Margin
Wholesale profit margin is calculated by subtracting the product cost from the wholesale selling price to determine gross profit. Gross profit is then divided by the wholesale selling price and multiplied by 100 to produce the wholesale margin percentage.
For example, if a product costs £40 and is sold wholesale for £60, the gross profit is £20 per unit. The wholesale margin is £20 divided by £60, multiplied by 100, which produces a margin of 33.33%.
Wholesale Margin Formula
The wholesale margin formula is: wholesale margin = (wholesale selling price − product cost) ÷ wholesale selling price × 100. The margin expresses gross profit as a percentage of the selling price.
Wholesale Markup Formula
Markup is calculated differently from margin. The markup formula is: markup = (wholesale selling price − product cost) ÷ product cost × 100. Using a £40 product cost and a £60 wholesale price gives a markup of 50%.
Wholesale Margin vs Markup
Margin and markup both describe the relationship between cost, selling price and profit, but they use different bases. Margin measures profit against the selling price, whereas markup measures profit against the product cost.
For example, a product costing £50 and selling for £75 generates £25 gross profit. The wholesale margin is 33.33%, while the markup is 50%. Understanding the difference is important when setting wholesale prices and comparing pricing targets.
